With different sprocket sizes, the gear ratio can be varied. Larger sprockets increase the RPM and improve acceleration, while smaller sprockets reduce the RPM at the rear wheel and increase top speed. At the same time, there is always a loss of top speed with larger sprockets and a loss of acceleration with smaller ones.
