In the restoration or maintenance of classic mopeds such as Puch or Sachs, the retaining band for the bearing shell of the steering head bearing plays an important role. This is a special clamp ring, often referred to as a "snap ring" or "spring band", which sits on the lower bearing ring of the steering head bearing.
Its main function is to secure the bearing shell in the steering tube of the frame while simultaneously compensating for the axial play (movement in the longitudinal direction) of the fork. Due to its spring effect, it clamps the lower bearing ring so that it sits firmly and has no play. This is crucial for precise and safe steering. Without this band, the lower bearing ring would sit loosely in the frame, and a correct adjustment of the steering head bearing would not be possible.
