With different gear sizes, the transmission can be varied. Larger gears increase the RPM and improve acceleration, while smaller gears reduce the RPM at the rear wheel and increase the top speed. At the same time, there is always a loss of top speed with larger gears and a loss of acceleration with smaller gears as a consequence.
